The University of Louisville School of Medicine is one of the oldest medical schools west of the Allegheny Mountains and home to some of the most prominent researchers in the nation.

The medical school is the education and research partner of the Louisville Medical Center, which includes a nationally recognized university hospital and two leading, private health care systems - Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services and Norton Healthcare.

The eyes of the medical world regularly turn to the Louisville Medical Center, whether the focus is on artificial hearts, hand transplants or researching new ways to treat failing eyesight.

New buildings, heralded as some of the finest research facilities in the country, are quickly filled with scientists trying to find cures for sickle-cell anemia, AIDS and cancer, working to eliminate paralysis caused by spinal-cord injury and developing methods to eradicate childhood academic problems caused by sleep disorders.

U of L scientists helped invent the first vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, discovered embryonic-like stem cells in adult bone marrow and have more than a dozen new cancer drugs in the development pipeline.

More money has made a difference. Our sponsored programs reached a record level in 2005-2006:  a total of $178 million, a 368 percent increase over the last 10 years.  Federal research funding was more than $74 million, a 790 percent increase over the last 10 years. Growth in our research funding last year occurred at a time when federal funding for most research programs was flat; and the competition for federal funds was fierce.  We are proud that over the last five years U of L has experienced the fastest percentage growth in NIH funding of any university.
